How Sleep Detoxes your Brain for Clearer Thinking & Lifelong Dementia Protection Craig McCloskey

Inside This Brief Trailer You Will Learn:

Let’s be honest, detoxification has become a huge buzz word lately. But what does it really mean to detox?

The body is constantly undergoing many catabolic and anabolic processes. That basically means we’re constantly under construction.

Catabolic = to break down

Anabolic = to build up

There’s a balance - a homeostasis - we need in order to live. It’s simply nature. We need to ebb and flow with each breath.

By the sheer aspect of our human design, being awake is more catabolic - we break ourselves down just by breathing and going throughout our day.

Sleep, on the other hand, is more anabolic - it builds us back up. We intuitively know this, though, don’t we? We feel the immediate effects of one sleepless night. But often we give ourselves the excuse we can make up for it by a cup of coffee, or sleeping in on the weekend.

But what are the consequences of just one night of poor sleep? Let alone the consequences of weeks, months, and even years of chronic poor sleep quality.

Those statistics might just shock you. But first, why do we need sleep? And what are the major benefits sleeping better can provide for us?

The major one as you could’ve guessed is…detoxification!

Unlike the rest of our body which has the lymphatic system, our brain doesn’t have the same detox pathways. Instead, we have what’s called the glymphatic system - which is a shoutout to the glial cells that run the show.

Our lymphatic system moves when we move. That’s why we need to workout, breathe, and move our body to help our natural detox processes along.

Our brains, on the other hand, can really only detoxify when we sleep. Our glymphatic system is only active when we prioritize deep, rejuvenate sleep!

According to researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), sleep is necessary for the brain to get rid of waste. The study, published in the journal Science, also reveals that the brain’s cells shrink by 60% while we sleep to wash away the cellular garbage more effectively (1).

And when it comes to sleep and risk of dementia, the science could not be more clear.

According to one 2021 observational-based study published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers followed nearly 8,000 people in Great Britain for about 25 years, beginning when they were about 50 years old (2).

The subjects who reported averaging 6 hours or less sleep a night were 30 percent more likely to develop dementia than those who regularly averaged 7 hours or more of sleep per night.

This is not causation, however. This is solely showing a connection between the two. More experimental studies are needed to determine cause and effect.

However, we shouldn’t downplay the importance of a major health pillar. Sleep is vital for any living being on this planet, and it’s worth noting that when any other species lives in harmony in their original adapted environment they are free of chronic disease.

Only when you look at domesticated species like humans, their pets, and animals in confined cages (zoos) do you see staggering rates of chronic illness - suggesting it’s our environment that is the large culprit behind these illnesses.

Sleep is part of that environment. We sleep differently than any other species in their original environment. We no longer sleep under dark skies, following the natural circadian cycles our biology expects.

Nowadays, we are no longer able to cycle through our deep stages of sleep due to chronic nutritional deficiencies and artificial lights on 24/7.
