Do You Need More Quiet Time In Your Life? | McClos-Key's to Health

"Doing nothing often leads to the very best of something."

I was recently watching the movie Christopher Robin with Bethany. If you have young kids I highly recommend making a family night out of it. It's a phenomenal movie that will help you see life from a beautiful perspective.

It's one of those movies that's full of quotes that you can apply to life. This quote above is one that Pooh said that really made me stop and think.

How often do you do nothing in your life? Do you prioritize deep thinking?

And when I say nothing, I mean literally nothing with no distractions. No phone. No social media. No Netflix without the chill. Absolutely nothing.

If you think about it, I'd say for most of us when we have downtime, we immediately jump right on our phones so we don't get bored.

We have so many distractions in our world that didn't exist just a few decades ago. They make it hard to be alone with our thoughts.

Not only was I watching Christopher Robin, but I also watched a little bit of the TV show Alone and it really solidified this concept for me. 10 trained survival experts are placed alone in the middle of the arctic to see how long they can survive off the land and outlast all other contestants.

They even film everything themselves. No camera crew, no cell phones, nothing but them, their gear, and what they can use to live off the land for sometimes up to 100 days.

Something you'll hear every contestant say when they first get dropped off and the helicopter flies away is how quiet it is. Can you imagine being alone with just your thoughts for that long, with that amount of quiet in your life?

Some might say you would go crazy. And true, we were not meant to be alone. We need human connection. It's literally built into our DNA. But also, nature's kind of quiet is also built into our DNA as well.

I personally think constant distraction with never ending subconscious stimuli all of the time would make us more crazy than the quiet sounds of nature.

It sounds miserable to be alone in the arctic, right? But what if you added in a whole tribe of 100 people? Then it wouldn't be so bad.

Have you ever had that type of quiet before in your life?

I can count on one hand the amount of times I've had that type of quiet. No cars, no notifications, no sounds of appliances running, no noisy neighbors. Just silence.

Most of us born in this society don't even know what I'm talking about. I've only experienced that type of quiet when I go hunting in the middle of the woods. But even then I can often hear the faint sounds of a car drive by at times because of the surrounding city.

Take a moment to think about that next time you find some peace and quiet. Odds are you'll hear the sounds of cars outside, the refrigerator or washing machine running, maybe a barking dog, or a neighbor cutting their grass.

Once you hear all the noise, you can't unhear it. And I think it's this constant exposure to stimuli from every direction that's part of a much larger problem.

It promotes added subconscious stress that inhibits fat loss.

It doesn't allow us the ability to think deeply or critically.

And I should mention that most people find it hard to be alone with their thoughts. When we're alone with our thoughts all the past trauma and insecurities arise. That's why we often grab our phones to escape our own minds. That's the real pandemic.

We no longer have the ability to do just do nothing. And it's in these moments where doing nothing leads to the best of something. And having true silence is part of the magic that makes doing nothing so powerful.

Just take a moment to look at your life and see where you can find quiet. Find time alone with your thoughts.

It was in these moments for me that this business was built. McCloskey Wellness was born out of being alone with my thoughts.

Every amazing thing in my life was born out of thinking deeply (without distractions) and acting on those clear and concise thoughts.

If you are struggling with something in your life that you're not clear on, doing nothing is a large part of the answer. But once you get your answer by doing nothing, then it is time to act on that nothing so you can accomplish something.
