7 Major Causes of Common Digestive Issues with Holistic Root Cause Solutions

Inside This Trailer You Will Learn:

There are many common causes of digestive issues like Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, and even just things as simple as upset stomach and an intolerance to certain foods.

Here are the top 7 causes:

1. Diet

Processed foods, gluten, vegetable oils, added sugar, and most all modern day foods have been shown to be highly associated and even causal of many common digestive issues (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

In particular, one 2013 study showed that gluten caused leaky gut in 100% of participants tested, by means of triggering a protein called zonulin (4). Zonulin is responsible for opening the lining of the gut, allowing foreign particles to enter the bloodstream and internal organs.

2. Common Food Intolerances

Foods lie on a spectrum of intolerance to sensitivity to a full blown allergic reaction. Most of us experience a level of intolerance on a regular basis. Symptoms can include bloating, gas, upset stomach, indigestion, heartburn, and more. Just because you experience these symptoms, however, doesn’t mean it is a food intolerance. These are just general symptoms that commonly occur.

Common trigger foods for food intolerances are:

  • Wheat

  • Gluten

  • Soy

  • Corn

  • Dairy

  • Eggs

  • Peanuts

  • Tree nuts

  • Fish

  • Shellfish

  • Fructose

  • Sulfites

  • Yeast

  • MSG or Monosodium Glutamate

  • Sugar

3. Medications / Antibiotics

Antibiotics have been linked with many autoimmune conditions and shown to be causal in several studies (6, 7).

Antibiotics have been directly shown in a case-controlled study to be associated with the development of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Researchers concluded their study by saying, “Antibiotic prescriptions are associated with a higher risk of RA. This may be due to microbiota disturbances or underlying infections driving risk.”

The best way to correct this is to begin fortifying your body’s own gut health through eating a health-promoting elimination diet, which will not only allow the gut to heal but also help you to identify any trigger foods.

4. Stress

Stress has been shown to be a major cause of digestive issues and autoimmune conditions.

Stress has been shown to interact with gut health by:

  • Reducing stomach acid (8, 9, 10)

  • Reducing blood flow to the gut (10)

  • Reducing gut motility (11, 12)

  • Preventing the parasympathetic nervous system from activating

  • Contributing to leaky gut (13)

There are many ways to manage stress in a healthy way, including:

  • Talking to someone else in person

  • Journaling

  • Meditation and/or mindfulness

  • Exercise

  • Play

  • Breathwork

5. Leaky Gut

Leaky Gut, sometimes called Leaky Gut Syndrome, Hyperpermeable Intestines, or Intestinal Hyperpermeability results when tight junctions in the gut, which control what passes through the intestinal lining do not work properly.

Although this condition is still poorly understood or not recognized by many health care professionals, there is now considerable data showing that leaky gut may be associated with many diseases, both inside and outside the gut (14, 15, 16, 17).

6. Heavy Metal toxicity

Heavy metals are known to cause inflammation when in contact with the intestines, a contributing factor to leaky gut (18, 19). Therefore, heavy metals can easily make their way into the bloodstream and anywhere else in the body.

What is especially concerning about heavy metals is that we all are exposed to them every single day.

They’re in the polluted air we breathe; the water we drink; the cosmetics we apply directly on our skin; the cookware we use to prepare our food; and even things like cleaning products, deodorants, and dental fillings as well as the paint and dust in our homes and offices!

The most common and dangerous heavy metals are mercury, arsenic, aluminum, and lead.

7. Environmental Toxins

If you live in the domesticated world like myself, you’re exposed to an array of environmental toxins. These are found in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the furniture we sit on, the cosmetics we apply to our skin, the food we eat, and more.

Here are just a few that are known to cause digestive damage:

  • Bisphenol A or BPA (20)

  • Phthalates (21)

  • Formaldehyde (22)

  • Chlorine (23)

  • GMOs

  • Pesticide Residues (24)
